Your Transmission
Most people have a limited understanding of their automobile’s transmission
and its function. Similarly, they have a limited understanding of why
transmissions fail. An overview of the function of a transmission will
help explain why transmissions fail and are so expensive to repair.
An automobile engine has a maximum rpm, that is, a maximum pace at which
it can work. The transmission allows the car to work at its maximum in
different gears which create different speeds. The engine’s maximum
pace is achieved in first gear with a lot of power to start the car’s
motion but with a low maximum speed. Third gear, on the other hand, requires
less power but allows the engine’s maximum pace to produce higher
speeds. Without a transmission, an automobile would have only one gear
and would probably only move at 15 to 20 miles per hour. Obviously, this
is an extremely simple explanation for the complex operation of a transmission.
It is, however, enough of an explanation to stress the importance a well-functioning
transmission.
In order to maintain the good working condition of a transmission, drivers
should check a car’s transmission fluids often and have the fluids
changed on a regular basis. Low fluid levels and leakage can be detrimental
to the functioning of a car. The fluid is not only a lubricant but cools
the transmission; overheating can quickly destroy a transmission and cost
consumers more that $1800.00. Noise from a transmission and delays in
its operation are also indicators of problems. Not all transmission problems
are costly; sometimes an adjustment will correct the problem. However,
the main reason transmission repairs are so expensive is because they
are difficult and time consuming to diagnose. Most of the time, a mechanic
has to completely disassemble the tranny before he can offer a cost estimate.
At more than $75.00 and hour, this alone can be very costly.
The best way to protect yourself from the shock of transmission repair
costs is to purchase an extended service warranty. Because transmissions
usually fail as the vehicle gets a bit older, an extended service warranty
will cover the vehicle repairs beyond the original manufacturers warranty.
Look for a warranty that offers power train protection and other protections
you feel are important. Such a warranty is also important because it allows
you to have the vehicle repaired at the first sign of trouble regardless
of how much money you have in your pocket that moment. You can always
afford to have your car repaired because all you pay is a minimum deductible.
Save yourself the money and the stress. The investment in such a warranty
will safeguard your wallet if your transmission begins to leak, slip,
delay, or is destroyed by overheating.
